Dining etiquette rules

1. Mind your attire

The perfect attire will depends on what kind of dining you are attending. A full business suit is expected during a formal event, but may seem out of place during a casual networking dining with a customer. Know the background of your business dining and dress accordingly.

2. Punctuality matters

Punctuality is important in any occasion. It shows your respect towards other participant in the event. If you are the host, then it is better to arrive earlier than the agreed time. This allow the servers to prepare your table earlier. The last thing you want is making other guest wait due to your tardiness.

3. Light talks

Before getting into the main topic of the business dining, make some light talks. Maybe about your family, any hot topics, sport, etc. This will be a kind of ice breaker between the dining participants. Be mindful of the participant you are talking with and do not get overly personal with someone you just met.

4. Moderation is key

Do not go over in any aspect. If the host let you order whatever you want, then do not order the most expensive thing in the menu. If alcohol is served, do not drink until you are drunk. If the host ask you to order more, do not order excessively. The focus of the dining should be the topic and not how many glasses of wine you can drink.

5. Be polite

Be polite to the restaurant staff, your guest, and any other people present during the business dining. "please" and "thank you" should be used whenever you asked for something. Do not complain or criticize the service or food since the complain will seem negative and an insult to the host to criticize. Being polite is the easiest way to make good impression to other people.

Tips for a successful business dining

1. Know your guest

Each guest can be unique. they might have some dietary restrictions or have a dislike to some type of food. You cannot bring someone who is a vegetarian to a steakhouse or someone who is lactose intolerant to a dairy themed restaurant. Make sure you know your guest and if you don't, it is okay to ask.

2. Don't be adventurous

Go with what you know will be good. it is better to bring your guest to an established restaurant or some place you have been before. Do not bring them to an obscure restaurant that you have never been to and have no review at all.

3. Pay attention to the price

The worst thing that could happen is when the final bill exceed what you can pay at the moment. Find a restaurant that has the appropriate price range. a restaurant that is too expensive might intimidate your client while a place that is too cheap might not be the best impression towards your customer.
